Why your digestion is still struggling (it's not what you're eating)
What if your bloating, your afternoon crash, your unpredictable gut — were all trying to tell you the same thing?
I've been thinking a lot this week about how many women come to me having already tried everything — and I mean everything — and still feeling off in their body. If that's you right now, I want you to know: you are not missing something obvious. You are missing something upstream. That's what this issue is about.
WHAT YOUR BODY KNOWS
She came to me eating very carefully.
Skipping breakfast. Salad for lunch. Baked chicken for dinner. Very little. Very clean. And she wasn't losing weight, she wasn't feeling well, and the harder she tried, the more off she felt.
When I looked at the full picture — how much she was eating, the rhythm of it — something became clear. She wasn't eating enough. And her body knew it.
So I told her to eat more. I know. That sounds counterintuitive. But here's what was happening: her body wasn't receiving enough nourishment consistently, and it was reading that as a threat. A body that feels threatened doesn't run digestion well. It can't afford to — it's too busy prioritizing survival.
Over about six months, she lost 25 pounds. Not through restriction. Through nourishment. Not because her body was broken. Because her body finally felt safe enough to function.
This is what I want you to understand today. Your gut issues — the bloating, the unpredictability, the sensitivity to things that never used to bother you — are almost never really about the food. They are about the state your nervous system is in when you're trying to digest. And once you understand which pattern your body is running, everything starts to make a lot more sense.
If you've been struggling with unpredictable digestion despite doing everything right, your nervous system may be the missing piece. Here are three patterns that explain why your gut feels off — and what to do about each one.
Pattern #1: Running on Empty — You Eat on the Go
You are always moving, and your meals reflect it — grabbed on the way out, eaten standing, finished while answering one more email. You don't think of yourself as stressed. You think of yourself as busy. But to your nervous system, those two things feel exactly the same. In Ayurveda, this is a Vata pattern — movement out of balance — and it shows up as bloating, afternoon crashes, and digestion that just feels unreliable. The reason isn't what you're eating. It's that your body never gets the signal that it's safe to digest. One thing to try: sit down to eat, even for five minutes, before you open anything else. That small pause tells your nervous system it can finally shift out of high gear — and that's where digestion begins to come back online.
Pattern #2: Researched Everything — And Still Feel Off
You've done the elimination diets, the food sensitivity tests, the supplement protocols, the research. You know more about gut health than most people. And you've had wins — you felt better for a while — but the issues keep coming back. The thing that might haunt you most is that your tests come back normal. Everything looks fine on paper. And yet your body says otherwise. Here's what I want you to hear: you are not imagining it, and you are not the problem. What's more likely is that the answer is upstream of the gut entirely. Your digestion, your anxiety before a stressful event, the way everything gets worse when you're overwhelmed — those aren't separate issues. They're all being shaped by the same thing: your nervous system. The gut has its own nervous system, and it is exquisitely sensitive to threat. The solution isn't more information or another protocol. It's helping your body feel safe. In practice, that can look as simple as three slow breaths before you eat — a signal to your nervous system that the threat has passed and it's okay to digest.
Pattern #3: Doing It Right — But Still Bloated
You eat clean, you've cut out the inflammatory foods, you're careful — and you're still bloated, still sensitive, still confused. This pattern is the one I see most often in women who are doing a lot of things right but not eating enough. When the body isn't receiving consistent nourishment, it reads that as scarcity — as threat. And a body in survival mode cannot run digestion well. In Ayurveda, we call your digestive capacity Agni — your digestive fire. Like any fire, it needs consistent fuel to stay strong. When you undereat or eat erratically, that fire weakens, and what you do eat doesn't get processed the way it should. There's also this: many genuinely healthy foods — raw vegetables, cold salads, smoothies — require significant digestive energy to break down. When your system is already taxed, they can create more discomfort, not less. Your body isn't rejecting your effort. It may just need more warmth, more consistency, more ease. Start with one thing: swap one meal for something warm and cooked, and notice how that feels.
All three of these patterns look different on the surface. But they share something underneath. In every one of them, the gut issues aren't really about food. They're about the state of the nervous system when the body is trying to digest.
When your body is in a stress state — whether that's visible, high-intensity stress or the quieter chronic version that comes from holding too much for too long — it deprioritizes digestion every single time. That is not a flaw in your design. That is your body doing exactly what it was built to do.
The problem for so many of us is that the stress state has become the baseline. It's not dramatic. It's just the hum. A body that never quite gets the signal that it's safe to rest and digest.
And when your body finally does feel safe — when the nervous system has enough support, enough rhythm, enough signals that things are okay — digestion begins to work the way it was meant to.
That's the thing no elimination diet addresses. That's the thing no supplement can fully fix. Because it's not a food problem at its source. It's a safety problem. And your body has a pattern. And that pattern is solvable.
What would it mean for you to stop fighting your digestion — and start working with it instead?
The bottom line: Your body isn't failing you. It's been trying to tell you something.
GOOD MEDICINE THIS WEEK
Here's what's had my attention lately.
🎧 Why Your Digestion Feels Off (And the Pattern Behind It)
This is the episode that inspired this whole newsletter. I go deep into each of the three patterns, including the specific foods and eating habits that reveal what your nervous system is actually doing. If something in this newsletter resonated, this episode will take you further. You can find it wherever you listen to podcasts or at the link below.
🎧 12-Minute Yoga Nidra
If you're reading this and thinking I need to start somewhere, this is where I'd send you first. Yoga nidra is one of the most powerful tools I know for helping the nervous system shift out of survival mode — and this practice is only 12 minutes. Short enough to actually do. Deep enough to feel the difference.
Do you recognize yourself in one of these three patterns? I'd love to know which one feels most like you. Hit reply and tell me.
WHAT RHYTHM ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE
The most common thing I hear from women who are struggling with digestion is some version of: I just can't find the pattern.
But here's what I've come to understand after years of working with women on this: the pattern is always there. You just might be looking in the wrong place for it.
Your gut isn't operating randomly. It's responding — to the pace you're moving at, to the amount of nourishment you're giving it, to how safe your nervous system feels in any given moment. Once you understand which of the three patterns your body tends toward, you stop guessing. You stop trying random things and hoping something sticks. You start supporting your body in the way it actually needs.
That's exactly what my digestive personality quiz is designed to help you do. It takes just a few minutes, it's rooted in Ayurvedic principles, and it will show you which pattern fits you — and what your body is most likely asking for.
IN MY WORLD RIGHT NOW
I just finished the Spring Reset cleanse — and what came up surprised me. Allergies and inflammation I didn't even realize were there. It's a good reminder that the body always has something to show us when we slow down enough to listen. I'm deep in nourishing foods right now, consistently making meals designed to rebuild tissues and increase vitality — what Ayurveda calls building ojas. It feels like coming home.
