What Bloating, Brain Fog, and Fatigue Are Actually Trying to Tell You

You've done the elimination diet. Taken the supplements. Followed the protocol. So why does something still feel off?

Summer is starting to arrive and I can already feel the shift — more heat, more stimulation, more of everything. This week I've been thinking a lot about what that intensity does inside the body, especially for those of us who are already carrying more than our fair share. That's what this issue is about.

If you've been wondering why something still feels off despite doing everything right — I made something to help you find the pattern. 👉 Take the free "Why Is Your Gut Always Off?" quiz here — 2 minutes, rooted in Ayurvedic principles.

What Your Body Knows

One day, Missy Elliott reached for the brake while driving — and her leg wouldn't stop shaking. The tremors were so severe she almost crashed. That was how she found out her body had been fighting an autoimmune storm for a very long time.

Diagnosed with Graves' disease in 2008, she stepped quietly away from the spotlight she had spent a decade building. The symptoms accumulated: extreme weight loss, relentless headaches, hair falling out, blood pressure climbing. And then the thing that undid her most — she couldn't hold a pen. A woman who wrote her own lyrics, who had built an entire career on words and rhythm, sat with a friend and watched her write the lyrics out for her. "I felt helpless," she said.

Here's what I want you to sit with: her body wasn't broken. It was overwhelmed. It had been asking for something for a very long time — through overwork, through chronic stress, through a nervous system that had never been given enough recovery. The inflammation was the message. And when she finally stopped trying to push through it and started listening — nourishing her body consistently, drinking more water, moving with rhythm rather than performance pressure — something shifted. By 2018, she was off medication entirely. By 2024, she went on her first headlining tour in 16 years.

She didn't eliminate the inflammation. She gave her body what it had been asking for all along.

I think about her story often when I'm sitting with a client who has done everything right — the elimination diet, the supplements, the protocol — and still feels like something underneath isn't shifting. Because the truth is, inflammation isn't the enemy. It never was. It's one of the most intelligent things your body does. And when we keep trying to silence it without reading it, it finds another way to speak.

The body doesn't malfunction. It communicates. Here are three reasons why reading that signal matters more than silencing it.

Reason #1: Recognize — Inflammation Is a Message, Not a Malfunction

Inflammation is a protective response — your body doing exactly what it was designed to do when it perceives a threat. Chronic low-grade inflammation isn't your body malfunctioning. It's your body signaling that something underneath hasn't been addressed. When we treat it as the enemy, we miss the message entirely.

Reason #2: Examine — Your Gut and Brain Are in Constant Conversation

Your gut and your brain are in constant conversation through what science now calls the gut-brain axis — a two-way signaling network that runs through your nervous system, your hormones, and your immune messengers. When you are under chronic stress, that conversation gets disrupted. Digestion slows. Repair slows. The body stays in survival mode. And survival mode doesn't heal — it holds on.

Reason #3: Address — The Body Needs Rhythm, Not Another Protocol

What the body needs in order to move out of survival mode isn't another protocol that asks more of it. It needs rhythm. Recovery. Consistent signals of safety. Simple nourishment that the system can actually receive and use. This is what Ayurveda has always understood — that healing is not about force. It's about creating the conditions in which the body can finally do what it already knows how to do.

What would it mean to stop trying to silence your body — and start listening to it instead?

The bottom line: Your body isn't failing you. It's been trying to tell you something.

Good Medicine This Week

Here's what's had my attention lately.

🎧 Always Inflamed? Why Your Body Feels This Way — And What's Actually Behind It
This is the episode I wish someone had handed me years ago. I walk through why chronic low-grade inflammation differs from the acute kind, how your gut and brain are in constant conversation, and what chronic stress does to that conversation over time. If you've been searching "anti-inflammatory diet not working" or "why do I still feel off," this one is for you. 👉 Listen here — The Body Rhythm Podcast on your favorite listening platform.

🌿 A simple summer ritual — aloe vera juice and coconut water As the heat and intensity of summer build, this is the time to start cooling the system from the inside. I've been adding a small amount of aloe vera juice to my morning routine — it's deeply soothing to the gut lining and helps bring down internal heat before it accumulates. Paired with unsweetened coconut water throughout the day, it's one of the gentlest, most nourishing things you can do right now. No protocol. Just rhythm and ritual.

Have you ever noticed your body feeling more inflamed or reactive in summer? Hit reply and tell me what that looks like for you.

What Rhythm Actually Looks Like

The elimination diets, the supplements, the protocols — if none of them have fully resolved what's happening in your body, it's not because you haven't tried hard enough. It's because inflammation isn't the root problem to eliminate. It's a signal.

And that signal is readable. Once you understand which pattern your body is running — what it's actually responding to beneath the surface — you stop guessing. You stop cycling through the next thing hoping this one finally sticks. You start supporting your body in the way it actually needs.

📄 Why Is Your Gut Always Off? — Take the Quiz If your digestion has felt different lately — bloated, sluggish, unpredictable, or just not quite right — this quiz was made for you. Your results will help you understand what your gut is actually responding to, and what it needs. And if you know someone who's been struggling with this, send it their way. This is the kind of thing that can open a door for someone who didn't know where to start.
